Class 4 is the highest rating in the UL 2218 impact test: a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, twice, on the same spot, without cracking the shingle mat. It exists because hail is the single largest source of property claims in Colorado, and carriers price roofs accordingly.
Most major carriers writing policies in our service area offer premium discounts for certified Class 4 installations, commonly in the 5–30% range on the wind/hail portion of the premium. Over the life of a 30-year roof, that discount frequently covers the material upgrade cost several times over.
The catch: the discount isn't automatic. You need the manufacturer's certification for the specific product installed, an installation certificate from your contractor, and in some cases a signed roof form filed with your carrier. We prepare that packet as a standard part of every Class 4 install and file it with your agent.
One caution: some carriers pair the discount with a cosmetic-damage exclusion, which changes how future dent claims on metal accessories are handled. We'll walk you through whether that trade makes sense for your home before you commit.
